For years, document review relied on human reviewers to categorize documents for use in all cases. Document reviews were always limited by human reviewers, who possessed different skill levels, knowledge sets, were constrained by the timing and amount of hours they could provide in a day, and have a tremendous financial cost associated with their hourly output. Additionally, responses are a black box, constrained by the limitations of human reviewers, providing at best selections from a limited menu of options to identify how and why a document should be coded.

Applying Generative AI
The application of Generative AI changes the way document reviews can be performed. Human inputs are limited to true experts on a matter, providing detailed instructions, which are expertly followed by machine understanding. Relying on machines to provide the bulk of the work creates new consistency, as multiple perspectives are not applied, but instead the vision of the expert. As the limitations imposed by machine time are significantly less than those imposed by human review, new workflows and timing can be created for reviews, preventing the early start of review of large document sets to meet tight deadlines.

Outputs from Generative AI
Most importantly, outputs from Generative AI answers the question why a document is coded the way it is, giving a greater confidence to the managing attorneys that the review meets their goals and provides more information about each document as reasons and specific information from the document can be identified from the documents without requiring a human to stop and add that information, which is an incredibly expensive and time consuming endeavor.
